Building Self-Esteem: Practical Tips for Young Women

Updated: Jun 23

To the young women reading this who may struggle with self-love or even understanding what that really means, we want you to know this:

It’s okay if you don’t fully know how to love or value yourself, especially if you’ve never been properly loved or if someone made you question your worth. You don’t need to feel embarrassed or ashamed. Learning to love yourself is not always easy, and for many, it’s a journey. If that’s where you are, we see you. Be encouraged. You’re already getting better. With each small step and decision, you’ll begin to see yourself more clearly through the eyes of Christ: fearfully and wonderfully made🫶🏽.

Self-esteem shapes how we see ourselves and interact with the world. It influences our confidence, decisions, and overall well-being. For young women, cultivating self-esteem is essential in unlocking potential, achieving goals, and feeling empowered. The good news? Self-esteem isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you can build. Here are some practical ways to strengthen your confidence and embrace your worth.

1. Be Kind to Yourself

Imagine how you would talk to a close friend who is feeling down. Now speak to yourself the same way. Self-compassion means accepting that mistakes and imperfections are part of being human. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, celebrate your efforts and growth. Give yourself the same kindness and encouragement you freely offer others.

2. Set Small, Achievable Goals

Big dreams start with small steps. Setting realistic goals and achieving them builds confidence over time. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and acknowledge each milestone. Every step forward is proof of your ability to grow and succeed.

3. Choose Your Circle Wisely

The people around you can either lift you up or bring you down. Surround yourself with supportive friends, mentors, and family members who encourage and inspire you. Distance yourself from negativity, whether it’s toxic friendships or social media accounts that make you feel inadequate. A positive environment makes a world of difference.

4. Rewrite Your Inner Narrative

Pay attention to the way you talk to yourself. Do you often think, “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t do this”? These thoughts may come from past experiences, but they don’t have to define you. Begin replacing them with affirmations like, “I am capable,” “I am loved,” and “I am learning and growing every day.” Speak life over yourself even when it feels unfamiliar. Over time, your mind begins to believe the truth you consistently feed it.

5. Embrace What Makes You Unique

There is no one else in the world exactly like you, and that’s your superpower. Instead of comparing yourself to others, celebrate what makes you special. Your strengths, talents, and passions make you who you are. Lean into them and own your individuality.

6. Take Care of Your Body and Mind

Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. A balanced lifestyle that includes nourishing food, movement, and enough rest can positively impact your mood and confidence. Just as important is mental self-care, like journaling, meditating, or spending time doing things that bring you joy.

7. Try Something New

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be intimidating, but it’s one of the best ways to build confidence. Whether it’s learning a new skill, joining a club, or speaking up in class, every new experience helps you grow. With each challenge you overcome, you prove to yourself just how capable you are.

8. Celebrate Your Progress

Take time to acknowledge how far you’ve come. Keep a journal of your accomplishments, no matter how small. Whether it’s getting through a tough day, completing a project, or speaking up for yourself, every win matters. Looking back on these moments can remind you of your strength and resilience.

9. Find and Use Your Voice

Your thoughts, opinions, and feelings are valuable. Practice expressing yourself with confidence, whether it’s sharing an idea, setting boundaries, or standing up for what you believe in. The more you advocate for yourself, the more empowered you’ll feel.

10. Give Back and Lift Others Up

Helping others can also help you. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring a younger girl, or simply being there for a friend, acts of kindness build a sense of purpose and connection. When you contribute to the world around you, you recognize your own worth and ability to make a difference.

Self-esteem is a journey

Building self-esteem doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a lifelong process. Some days will be easier than others, but every step you take toward believing in yourself is worth it. Remember, you are worthy, capable, and enough just as you are. Keep going. Keep growing. Never stop believing in your potential.

Dare 2 believe you are worth dignity, regard, and respect, and let that belief shape how you show up in the world. We’re rooting for you🫶🏽.
